We’ve long established on this blog that Australia has some of the best healthcare programs in the world. Thanks to Medicare (and the taxes funding it), any Australian citizen has affordable or even free access to optometric, medical, or hospital care.
And because the country has excellent medical schools and is also highly attractive to medical professionals from all over the world, many hospitals here feature state-of-the-art care in more ways than one.
Should you find yourself in need of medical attention, you may want to check in to any of the fine hospitals below:
One of the best public hospitals in Australia, the Royal Melbourne Hospital is also one of the oldest, having provided medical care to millions of Victoria’s residents for more than 165 years now. It is one of the leading teaching hospitals for tertiary healthcare and enjoys quite the reputation in the field of clinical research. Annual admissions reach up to 85,000 and the emergency room facilities are excellent.
Operated by St. John of God Healthcare (also one of the best healthcare providers in the country), this teaching hospital is home to Western Australia’s only comprehensive cancer treatment centre. It is also the state’s principal neurosurgery and liver transplant hospital and is estimated to treat about 420,000 patients every year.
The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital is one of the biggest public teaching hospitals in the country with three major research institutes within its compound: The University of Queensland’s Centre for Clinical Research, Brisbane Diamantina Health Partners, and the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. With 929 beds, it’s one of the biggest hospitals in Queensland and is a major player in the clinical research and teaching fields.
This private medical institution is one of the country’s leading providers of mental health services. The treatment regimens being implemented in this hospital are holistic, with exercise and fitness programs, art therapy, and educational sessions being offered along with general psychiatry. Delmont Private Hospital also has facilities and services for patients suffering from substance abuse, and they have both inpatient and day programs as well.
Like the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, St. John of God Healthcare is also behind the operations of this 363-bed hospital. It won the award for the best private ER for patient-centered care last year for the third year running. Its facilities in Perth include a 35-bed maternity ward, medical library, hydrotherapy pool, a 24-hour emergency department, an endoscopy suite, and an angiography suite.

Serena joined iRemit back in 2016, and has tormented its Marketing Head constantly ever since. To get through the rigors of writing about grave concerns like exchange rates, citizenship requirements, and PH-AU news, she likes to blast Mozart, Vivaldi, ONE OK ROCK, and Shigeru Umebayashi in the background. She does a mean Merida voice in her spare time too.
