20% Discount for Senior Citizens and PWD’s Will Soon Apply to Online Airfare Bookings

The 20% discount for Filipino senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWD’s) is nothing new. Under the law, this applies to the following for Filipinos aged 60 and above:

  1. Medical-related privileges;

  2. Domestic transportation privileges;

  3. Hotels, restaurants, recreational centers, and places of leisure;

  4. Admissions fees;

  5. Funeral and burial services

PWD’s, on the other hand, are entitled to a 20% discount on the following:

  1. Lodging establishments;

  2. Restaurants;

  3. Recreation centers;

  4. The purchase of medicines and food for special medical purposes;

  5. Medical and dental services, diagnostic and laboratory fees, and professional fees of attending physicians;

  6. Domestic air and sea travel;

  7. Land transportation travel;

  8. Funeral and burial services.

Perhaps the most important privilege for seniors and PWD’s are their discounts on medical and transportation expenses since this enables them to remain in good health and/or to see their families in different parts of the country. With more and more transactions being conducted online, however, these perks may soon apply to flights booked online.

Last week, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) announced that they would soon be requiring airline companies to grant the 20% discount to senior citizens and PWD’s who book their tickets online. (As of this writing, the said discount is only available if the beneficiaries arrange for their air transport via offline booking agents.)

The resolution is up for approval by the CAB this week, and once implemented, senior citizens and PWD’s who avail of the discount through online bookings will be required to present government-issued identification cards upon check-in for verification. Philippine passports, Office of Senior Citizen Affairs (OSCA)-issued ID’s, and digitized Social Security System, Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), and Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) ID’s are among the forms of identification that beneficiaries can present as proof of identity.

Those who are unable to prove their identity upon check-in or those who are found to be using fraudulent ID’s will be made to forfeit the discount, however.

Should this new initiative prove successful, it will certainly benefit quite a handful of Filipinos. According to the recent census data, 6.8 percent of the population is 60 years old and over, amounting to over 7 million senior citizens total. PWD’s, on the other hand, comprise 1.5% of the country at 1,450,000.
