Australia, a diverse society

Australia is a diverse society with people from many different social, cultural and religious backgrounds. Australians come from all over the world. In fact 44% of Australians were either born overseas or have a parent who was born overseas.

Australians has a wide variety of religions. Everyone is free to express their own cultural and religious beliefs within the law.

If you are open towards people, culture and traditions, most probably you’ll be successful in your new and democratic way of life.

There are state and territory laws that prohibit discrimination in a range of areas of public life (e.g. employment, education, accommodation) and on a range of grounds (e.g. race, gender, age reference).

English is the national language, although there are over 260 languages spoken in Australia, including indigenous languages. If you can’t speak English well, You may be eligible for free classes through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) to enhance your skills.
