In this age, the marketplace is yearning for creative output. Gone are the days were accomplishing mostly menial tasks can help you get far in your careers. Today you need meaningful work to stand out.


But it’s harder said than done. According to Cal Newport in his book “Deep Work”, such work is only possible by intense focus and concentration. And practicing yourself to go into “Deep Work” would do just that.


But for the procrastinators and the distracted (like me), another tool can be used for our disposal. I introduce the Pomodoro Technique!

Is this a special sauce you can eat to boost productivity? Actually, it’s even better. It’s a technique that can allow you to afford all the sauces you want.


The Pomodoro technique was invented by Francesco Cirillo. It is characterized by short bursts of productivity followed by multiple short rest periods to provide that hard first step jolt. He named it after the Tomato-shaped clock that he used while applying the technique.


It’s not exactly food, but, if you do it right, it can give you a feast in your family’s table.


How to Get Started


First, get a timer and set it at 25 minutes per assigned task. Secondly, focus on your work until the Pomodoro timer rings. There should be no distractions in between the 25-minute Pomodoro. Just complete deep work focus.


After the 25-minute burst, enjoy a short rest period (can be 5 minutes). Every after 4 Pomodoros, take longer break times.


As this may be catered to the individual, you can customize the 25-minutes to a higher time and also change the rest period accordingly. Try hard until you find your personal balance of short bursts to rest ratio.


Limiting Distraction

The one thing that may fail you is the constant distraction. If you are working where quite a number of people message you, you can try to get back to them. You can tell them: “I’m just working on something right now can I get back to you in X minutes?”


Some distractions are unavoidable such as emergencies. But most distractions are not time pressing. Find a way to filter or delay these distractions and your Pomodoros will have a lasting impact.

Any application can be used to time your Pomodoros. A normal timer can be used. Or you can opt for that quirky tomato-shaped timer.


As for me, I use the Forest App (iOS and Android). It’s just a timer that literally plants a virtual tree once you finish your Pomodoro cycle. In a day’s work, you can check the trees of productivity you planted. You can even see the amount of time you spend for each area you assign work with.


You aim to create forests! It might not mean anything. But the visual representation of your hard work surely gives a “gamified” feeling of accomplishment.
