Do you need a copy of your marriage certificate?

 

Whether you need it for your passport, your child’s enrollment in a Catholic school, legal rights, or just to commemorate your union, a marriage certificate is an important piece of paper.

 

If you got married anywhere in NSW, you can get a copy of it from NSW Registry of Birth, Death and Marriages. You can apply for your marriage certificate online, by post or in person.

 

For online applications, you need to prepare the following:

 

a.    Marriage Certificate Application Form

 

Complete the Marriage Certificate Application form.

 

b.    Three scanned photos of your IDs

 

You should be able to provide at least one ID in each three categories or at least 1 ID from the first two categories and 2 IDs from the third category.

Tertiary Education Institution ID Card.

Recent utility account with current residential address

 

c.    A letter of authorization

 

This letter is included in application form and it is needed only if someone else other than you or your husband is applying for the marriage certificate.

If you’d rather apply by post, complete the Marriage Certificate Application form. You may download by visiting the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages website or download here. Answer the form by pen or fill using Adobe Reader program and print the document. Mail to:

If you are applying by post, faxed or e-mailed forms and IDs will not be accepted.

 

You can also apply in person by visiting Registry Centres:

Parramatta Office on Justice Precinct Offices, 160 Marsden St. Parramatta NSW 2150

 

Offices are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4:30pm. Contact centres are open from 7am to 7pm and may be reached by phone through 13 77 88.

For online and phone applications, payments can be done through credit or debit cards under MasterCard, Visa or American Express (plus merchant fee). For physical application, payments accepted should be in cash, cheque, money order or credit cards including EFTPOS.

 

Marriage certificates are processed in 10 working days for standard fee ($51) while 4 working days for express ($75). Expect an additional of 6 working days for Australia Post to deliver your certificates.

 

All certificates will be delivered to address indicated in form. No certificates can be collected directly from the office.

 

Applying for a marriage certificate in Australia is easy, just visit the right agency in person or through the website and you will get all the information you need.
