Filipino-Australian to Compete in Paris
Filipino-Australian Paris-based fashion designer Karen Topacio is among the ten finalists of the prestigious E-Fashion Awards. The finalists were selected through online voting. In an in interview with The Philippine Times, Topacio stated, “Salamat and thank you to everyone who voted for me.”
E-Fashion Awards is an international design competition for design school students and budding fashion designers. It provides an avenue for young fashion designers to showcase their vision and original designs. On June 10, Topacio, along with the nine other finalists, will be given a chance to present her creations to renowned fashion photographer Ali Mahdavi and French couturier Alexis Mabille.
Topacio recently graduated from the International Fashion Academy (IFA) in Paris. Her graduating collection, Outgrowths A/W 2015, was featured in Rummage, an Indie magazine in Sydney, Australia. She was also featured on Stylebile.ph, a well-known fashion website in the Philippines.
Filipino-Australian Goes Global
Since the debut of her collection, Topacio has received several invitations to showcase her creations. She had been invited to show her collection at the Vancouver fashion week. To be asked to display her collection on the global market at such an early stage in her career is a solid proof of the young Filipino-Australian designer’s talent.
“It is a bit too early for me to be doing it as I just graduated from fashion school but it is a rare opportunity to be invited to a fashion week so I am thinking about it. I am looking for sponsors or perhaps I will create a crowdfunding account to help me get there. If I decide to do it, I will let you know,” stated Topacio.
Her Multidisciplinary Approach
Dubbed as a “clothes maker with a creative director’s mind” by Stylebible.ph, Topacio takes a multidisciplinary approach. Aside from fashion, her website also features her illustrations and works in photography and videography. You can see her works at www.karentopacio.com.
