Freelancing has definitely gone past the negative image. Back then, freelancing is deemed to be a side career for the scrimping poor. “Raket Raket” as some may say for the ones who can’t get a job. But now, it is a full-fledged career. Even top-tier professionals are getting on board. In fact, the Filipino freelancing trend is definitely growing fast.
But with anything, there are drawbacks. Working alone can make us lonely. Imagine working with just your pet plant in your living room X number of hours a day for a whole year? It’s normal to feel isolated.
That’s why most digital nomads opt for co-working spaces. Not entirely for the cup of coffee but mostly for saving ourselves from the loneliness trap. Regardless of where you are now, I’m here to help you find the best workplace for you. These are things you should look for in a co-working space.
This may be common sense, but the first thing should be location. You are a digital nomad. You can technically work anywhere with good Internet. But you are everywhere for a reason. Check out what’s near the potential co-working area.
Is it near your hostel? For sure, you don’t want to commute from traffic. Is it accessible to important landmarks/establishments to you like gyms and restaurants? Consider your location, because you’ll spend a considerable amount of time in this “home base” for the duration of your trip.
Community and Interaction
If you’re here for social interaction, it is best to assess the co-working community.
Do you feel the “vibe” when you enter the room?
Does it feel warm and welcoming?
Are the people interacting or are they just robots working the day out?
Is it too noisy or as quiet as a library?
Do they have events lined up in the co-working space?
This is the chance to finally meet like-minded people. Make sure you set your personal parameters.
Amenities For You and Me
If you have shortlisted some options, now is the time to check what’s included in the package. What do you get for paying for the co-working space?
WiFi is the lifeblood of your career. Reliable WiFI is definitely Number 1.
The other amenities will depend on your taste and needs. Does the place come with free coffee? Or better yet, a kitchen full of snacks open for all of you to consume? (I once stayed in one. I was so tempted to bag some food for home).
Do you need a meeting room or event space for your team presentation? Some co-working spaces have separate rooms for more private meetings and events.
For some, security and office access is the top priority. Is the facility safe against robbers? Is it open 24/7?
Again this is all preference. Better list down what you like to have at work.
Biggest Question: Do You Have the Budget for it?
After all the curating, now we face the bill. Unless you are swimming in cash, the price per day is an important factor in your decision.
How much do your demands cost? Check your budget if you can afford it. Check for payment plans. Some co-working spaces have hefty discounts for long-term stays.
Finding the perfect temporary home base is impossible. You will surely have problems and compromises. But just remember your main purpose. If at the very least, it got you out of loneliness, that is all worth it.
