Natural Ingredients You Can Use to Clean Your Home

Having a clean, odor free and pest free home is something most (if not all) of us gets obsessed about every now and then at least.

Good thing there are plenty of good cleaning products out there in the market for our every need. However, cleaning products are also expensive and they eat quite a chunk of our  budget. In addition, these products are usually made from strong and harmful chemicals.

No need to worry, you can make your own cleaning materials with natural ingredients that are mostly found in the kitchen. A few minutes of mixing and you will have your own range of cleaning products for a fraction of a cost.

The basic ingredients are:

  • vinegar

Since vinegar is made by fermentation, it has a weak form of acetic acid that makes it a perfect cleaning agent without being harmful to humans.

  • baking soda

Also known as sodium bicarbonate is a naturally occurring material that is non-toxic, multi purpose and cheap. It is a mild alkali making it a great cleaning material for almost anything you need to clean. It also helps neutralize odors rather than mask them.

  • lemon juice

Lemon and lemon juice is high in citric acid making it an awesome natural cleanser.

  • olive oil

Olive oil can serve as a lubricant and also as a polish. It is naturally made and non toxic.

  • essential oils

Essential oils come from natural pleasant smelling plants that are usually added in cleaning recipes to help make the area smell fresh and clean. Most scents recommended are lemon, lavender, pine, peppermint, tea tree and cinnamon essential oils.

Cleaning burnt pots and pans can be frustrating that you’d rather not deal with them and just buy a new one.

BUT you can make them all nice and shiny again with two ingredients: baking powder and water.

All you need to do is to boil 1-2 inches of water with 1 cup of baking soda. Let it boil for 15 minutes and gently scrub it. IT IS HOT so careful not to touch the pan or put your hand in the water. Wait for it to cool a bit before scrubbing.

Now that you are done with the pots, time to clean that stove top and the counters. All you need are 2 parts baking soda and 1 part olive oil to mix and make a paste.

Apply the paste on the stovetop and counters with a soft rag or sponge. Allow it to set before wiping with a citrus-vinegar solution. For tough stains, let the paste set overnight before wiping it away.

Next, and maybe one of the most dreaded areas to clean in the house, The Bathroom.

Cleaning the toilet is really simple using a mixture of 1 cup vinegar and ¼ cup baking soda. Pour the mixture in the toilet bowl for 15 minutes and then scrub and flush it as you would with a chemical detergent.

Next, get another batch of baking soda and add the same amount of water. Mix them together to make paste and clean the grout between your bathroom tiles. Remember to use a small brush and clean in circular motion. Rinse the area when done.

The Laundry

Your dirty clothes do not need to be washed by harmful chemicals as well. All you need are 3 soap bars (preferably coconut soap), 6 cups of soda crystals, and lemon essential oil.

All you need to do is to stir the soap and crystals thoroughly and use 2-3 TBSP per load and 5 drops of essential oil on your next wash day.

You can also make your own fabric softener with 5 litres of white vinegar and of course 3- -40 drops of your favorite scent.  Mix and shake them well in a bottle and use it as you would with a chemical version – only you need to use about ½ cup to the rinse cycle for small to average loads.

For almost everywhere else around the house you need:

1 part white vinegar and 1 part water and essential oils. Mix them all in a spray bottle, shake and you are ready to go. Although, avoid using this cleaner in electronic devices.

Another version of this all purpose cleaner is white vinegar, water and citrus peels. Some people like this better than the first one but it does need a little more time to complete.

First, put the peels in a bottle and add vinegar. Then, you have to let that sit for two weeks.

In two weeks, you are ready to strain the vinegar with a spray bottle. Remember to dilute it with water by adding the same amount of water as that of the vinegar.

Again, do not spray on electronic materials.

On the other hand, if you need something a little more specific like cleaning a stained carpet, you can simply mix 2 cups warm water, 1TBSP vinegar, and 1TBSP dish soap in a container, set aside.

Sprinkle baking soda on the stain and wait for 10 minutes before scrubbing the spot with a songed dipped in the mixture (water, vinegar and dish soap). Keep on blotting the area until stain is removed.

Now, combining 1 TBSP of olive oil, juice of 1 lemon and 1 TBSP water is not any recipe to taste but to wipe on those wooden floors to keep them shiny!

And lastly, in our list, pour baking soda in a container and add drops of your favorite essential oil. Mix them well and gradually add water to dissolve the baking soda. Pour the mixture in a spray bottle and spray those bad odors away.

Cleaning your home should not be expensive nor should it endanger your family with all those strong chemicals. Using natural products as cleaning agents are a great way to solve both.

Just remember to try them first in small unnoticeable areas to check the reaction of the your household object’s material before you use them entirely on the whole thing.
