Last Wednesday, millions of Filipinos were advised to prepare for one of the most potent typhoons to hit the disaster-prone country. Super Typhoon Lawin or Haima (i.e., international name) has a shocking weather band of 800 kilometers. This is why officials warned the public of destructive winds and huge storm surges.

If you need to visualize its potential effects, just recall what Super Typhoon Yolanda or Haiyan had done. It claimed over 7,350 lives in 2013. The current circumstance is so serious that some of the areas were placed under the storm signal of 5. A definite first for the weather bureau PAGASA! These areas include Isabela, Kalinga, Cagayan Apayao, Ilocos Norte, and Northern Abra.

Allan Tabel, the chief of the Philippine Interior Ministry’s disaster and information coordinating center, once said: “It’s not just heavy rain and strong winds that we are expecting. It’s also floods, landslides and storm surges in coastal areas. Those in these areas, you are in danger. Find safer ground…”

Lawin is predicted to exit the Philippine area of responsibility this evening (October 20). However, areas within the Northern and Central Luzon are warned against possible landslides and flash floods. Be vigilant and stay safe!
