Why Working From Home Is Both Heaven and Hell Why Working From Home Is Both Heaven and Hell

In theory, working from home sounds like a fantasy come to life. Working from home allows you to earn Australian Dollars despite being in the Philippines. It allows you to be in charge of various aspects of your life. However, what most people do not know is that these perks come with a price.

Your ability to glide through the setbacks of the home office depends on your personality. For instance, people who are procrastinators may have a hard time fighting the distractions at home. While, people who are disciplined (conscientious) can easily work through the domestic tides.

On that note, here are the advantages (heaven) and disadvantages (hell) of working from home:

One of the major advantages of working from home is the idea that you are your own boss. With no manager beside you, your deep-rooted passion will drive your creativity and productivity. The passion that comes from within is the most powerful motivation that an employer can cultivate. To illustrate this, a 2014 Stanford University study allowed call-center employees to work from home.

With the help of his Economics professor, graduate student James Liang offered some of the Ctrip’s employees the opportunity to work from home in a span of 9 months. Ctrip is a travel website owned by Liang himself. The study found out that the remote employees had higher productivity levels (13.5%) and lower chances of quitting (50%) compared to their counterparts. Most importantly, these remote employees reported that they are happier with their job. Having satisfied employees on board can propel the ship to the beautiful shore!

According to Liang and his professor, the outstanding results may be attributed to the quieter space that the employees created for themselves. You see, people who work from home have the freedom to create their own environment. They can paint the walls blue, play classic music, or place succulents on their desks – sky’s the limit.

Sometimes, the freedom to create one’s space coincides with the freedom to hold one’s schedule. Setting your own work hours enables you to do more of the things you want such as driving your children to school and attending Fiestas. You can even set a couple of vacations. Sipping hot chocolate in Australia or drinking coconut water in Bali sounds great to me!

Hell

There are always two sides of the same coin. Hence, you must also listen to the drawbacks of working from home. A pervasive disadvantage is the vulnerability to distractions such as noisy family members, accessible electronic devices, and abundant chores.

Filling the second spot on my list is the lack of separation between work and home. Based on personal experience, there were days when I worked beyond my designated hours. The absence of a management enforcing strict working time may add to the pressure of grinding endlessly.

If you are constantly distracted with multiple devices or constantly working overtime, higher utility costs is inevitable. This is especially true if you barely leave your house.

Last but certainly not the least, remote professionals may experience negative states as they were plucked from the “interpersonal office environment”. Negative states such as isolation, loneliness, and depression can be prevented if the employees stayed in touch with their previous colleagues. We all know how Filipinos love to interact with others!

In order to determine whether you work best at home or at the office, you must first weigh in the pros and cons. May the comparisons above help you decide to commit to an environment that best suits your preference and personality.
