Working while studying in Australia

Many international students find that working while studying, either through part-time, casual or voluntary work, will benefit you. It will be a great way for you to earn a little extra money or most importantly the fact that you’re gaining work experience which is an advantage in your job seeking process. Since, It’s what most of employers tend to look more than academic ability.
  • Internships

While completing your studies in Australia, Some universities their offer internship programs which include internship options in their programs. You can check with your education provider about information on internship opportunities.

  • Vocational Placements

As part of your course of study, you may be required to undertake a vocational work placement to gain your qualification.Work-based training requirements depend on the course you choose and that you will need to check with your eduction provider.

  • Volunteering

Volunteering your time is a fun way to make friends and get to know other people in Australia. Many non-profit organisations and community are always looking for hard-working volunteers with a time to spare. In Australia volunteers can do anything from planting trees and working at major events.

Your student visa allows you to work up to 40 hours per fortnight, however, there are a number of conditions that you will need to meet. These include:
  • You cannot commence working in Australia until you have started your course;

  • You can only work up to 40 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. This does not include work experience you undertake as part of your course requirements;

  • Voluntary, unpaid work is not included in the 40 hour limit if:

    • it is of benefit to the community;

    • it is for a non-profit organisation;

    • it is a designated volunteer position (that is, it would not otherwise be undertaken in return for wages by an Australian resident); and

    • no remuneration, either cash or kind, is received (board and lodging excepted).

  • You can work unlimited hours during holiday periods when your course is not in session.

Finding work experience is up to you. Remember that you will be up against other domestic and international students, so you will need to be well prepared. Working while studying will give you the experience as your weapon in looking for the job that fits your skills in the future.
